Claw Two-dimensional platformers and jumping games were the dominant feature of the early 1990s. By the end of the 90's, the platformers were no longer interesting and every new hit had to be 3D. At the same time, 2D platformers are one of the most fun games, but every time demands its own, so gaming companies have moved in a different direction. Fortunately, there are a few companies that have not forgotten about this genre, and in 1997 Claw is published. The game tells the story of the pirate Captain Claw (claw), who is probably looking for the whole world, because a reward of a million gold coins is written for him. Even though he is caught, he manages to escape from prison. You take on his role and set out on a painful journey to find a mysterious amulet that has magical powers. The very character of the pirate in the game is clear that the story takes place in the past and the graphics of the game are adapted to this - corsairs, deaths, pirates with swords, dynamite, or some magic. The game has a total of 16 levels, each of which takes place in a different environment and thus differs significantly in terms of graphics. The interesting thing about this game was the presence of multiplayer, and as one of the few games in those years, the game had its own page with the current ranking of the highest score. The Monolith company certainly took a risk when it released this game at a time when 3D action shooters were already flying, but I did very well, I think, because there were still enough players who knew how to appreciate a beautiful platformer. Road Rash Rough music, leather clothing, plenty of booze and sexy girls - these are the main characteristics of bikers, or at least how most people portray them. The game Road Rash is about motorcycles and playing this game you will... wait for it... confirm all these myths/ideas! In the game you will meet a bunch of people, who have quite a lot of money so they can afford to buy expensive and fast bikes, and their life are not very valuable for them. You will race in with fast bikes and believe me, this game is everything, but not a fair-play, the races are harsh. Each time your opponent will try to overtake you, you can attack him (kick him, punch him,...) and tries to crash his bike. In real life, a fall at a speed of about 200km/hour would be fatal, but in the game is just a small crash, after a short moment you get up get back on the track. Road Rash contains 5 different tracks and offers 3 game modes: Trash mode (sit on the bike and at play), Big Game Mode (Championship, where you start as a beginner and you have to move to the top) and Mano-a-Mano Game Mode (multiplayer game over a network). Amulets & Armor Amulets & Armor is a mission-based adventure/RPG that runs on DOS. When starting a new game, you have a choice of several characters (called archetypes here) that range from warriors to ranged combat to magicians. After that, you can choose one of several missions that place you in various levels wit specific objectives. Between missions you can also visit other places: ‘Store’, ‘Inn’, and ‘Bank’. The Inn, which lets you rest to heal, has exorbitant prices and is such unusable. You can visit the Store to buy various things like weapons and potions, and the Bank lets you store any gold you’ve found – it’s useful since you lose a lot of your carried gold whenever you die. The graphics in the game are atrocious by 1997 standards. It runs worse and looks far inferior to games such as Heretic, and in fact could be easily confused with a 3D title that came out sometime in the early 90s. The controls are slow and awkward, and don’t have any of the balance you expect from serious CRPGs, or the hectic violence found in mainstream 3D shooters. BeachHead 2002 BeachHead 2002 is an arcade shooter where you, as a lone one army gunner, have to defend against waves and waves of soldiers, tanks, APCs, planes and helicopters that have the sole objective of swarming your position. You have an anti-aircraft (AA) gun as your main dispenser of grief amongst the infantry, an anti-tank (AT) gun for those pesky APCs and tanks (they can also take out barges), surface to air missiles (SAMs) to swat airborne threats, infrequent off-screen artillery support, and a .45 automatic pistol to… well, get to this point and it’s pretty much game over. Sensible Golf Sensible Golf is a game dedicated to a sport that does not need to be introduced - golf. The game had the same characters - similar to those previously used with great success in Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder, although after release it was considered a commercial failure and received rather negative reviews. Part of the problem was that it used the same game engine as Sensible's previous games, so it had to be designed as an arcade game rather than a serious golf simulation, which many critics said led to a reduction in its overall lifespan. This version of the golf from Sensible Software boasts very simple operation, where almost everything is done for you by a computer. EF 2000: Special Edition EF2000 is a simulator of the Eurofighter 2000 fighter aircraft. The game is set in a fictitious war conflict, when Russia is about to invade Europe and for this purpose creates strongholds in northern Europe (for easier progress of its invading troops). The individual battles will take place in the detailed modeled environments of the Baltics, Finland, Sweden, Norway and parts of Russia. Warzone 2100 Warzone 2100 was one of the first in the line of 3D strategy games that started showing up at around the turn of the millennium. While the game’s concept is nothing new (a fight over a devastated world among armies that rely on the harvesting of a resource), its visual appeal and its clever interface are an achievement. Warzone 2100 combines a trio of great ideas which free up time from unit production and let you dwell more on strategic decisions. First, factories can be ordered to construct a variety of units, and then told to churn them out in batches—including an infinite loop. Second, the game requires you to research your way through a tech tree, and one branch leads to Commander units. Assign units to Commanders, and they’ll work as a team. Each kill the Commander’s team gets, the more experience both they and the Commander rake in, and the more units the Commander earns the right to control. The third link: automatic repairing. The Neverhood From time to time, there is a game that is so different from others that you remember it immediately regardless of whether it is so good or so bad. The Neverhood is just such an example of games and it is not just good, it is an excellent adventure where you will be dealing with a number of logical tasks. The game stands out particularly for its graphics processing - all characters and scenery are made of play dough. You control a play dough character named Klaymen. He must save the planet from the evil influence of malicious magician who tries to dominate Neverhood, so he could commit various evil things (classic adventure plot). At the beginning, you wake up in a small room and you must solve the first task - to get out of this room. The whole game is a combination of different logical tasks that you must complete before you can move on and believe me, this game si gonna torment your brain cells. The puzzles are different from the easier ones, where you have to stack a certain pattern, through more difficult - where you have to assemble the mechanism, to the heaviest, which took me a few hours (if you don't have perfect ear for music, you will spend a lot of time in one of the houses). Perspective of the game is taken in two ways - when you're inside, you're looking at Klaymen from the side, from the 3rd-person perspective. When you are outside, you look at the world with Klaymen's eyes. It is really a perfect adventure with the original graphics (everything you see in the game was created with about 3 tons of real play dough), and I highly recommend it to you to play it. Star Wars: Yoda Stories A 2D game, primarily launched in a window (in which almost half of the space is taken up by inventory), from a bird's eye view. The plot freely copies the fifth film episode, but of course we will see a lot of side quests and new locations. The story begins when Luke Skywalker lands his X-Wing on the planet Dagobah. After finding the astromechanical droid R2-D2 (which acts as an online help), we learn about the task of finding a master of the Jedi Order - Yoda. He will send us to the first event after a short conversation. The generated world can be quite large and full of secrets and is divided into several key areas, such as spaceports where the player can heal with medical droids, puzzle areas where new objects can be found, blockages that require solving objects or puzzles, as well as teleports , which the player can use to quickly scroll through the world map if they find a valuable locator item that displays the world map. Rollcage At the end of the 90's, the racing game market was very crowded, and in order to gain a foothold in it, you really had to come up with something new to engage players. And that is exactly what Attention to Detail did, which in 1999 came up with the excellent game Rollcage. This is a great racing game that actually has no rules, no boundaries, just a non-stop racing experience. The very name of the game "roll cage" suggests that it will be driven with almost unbreakable cars, where it doesn't matter if you crash, make hours, turn around, just step on the gas and move on. The individual tracks differ from each other not only in terms of graphics, but also in terrain and even gravity, so on some tracks you can fly nicely, or you can race on walls or ceilings. This is a great game that is fast, dynamic, very nice and fun at the same time. It is very difficult to find a weakness that you would blame for it.
