  18. Good news for anyone who has Battlefield friends spread across multiple platforms: Dice plans to build and test cross-play for Battlefield 2042 so people on different platforms can play with and against each other. Unfortunately, this also means that the technical, closed alpha test will be postponed until later this summer. During this test, they will test the cross-play functionality, and a few thousand players will be invited to play against each other on PC, Xbox Series X / S and Playstation 5. However, they point out that this is a relatively limited and controlled testing, and not in line with the open beta test that will be held later. In the final version of the game, they aim for players on PC, Xbox Series X / S and Playstation 5 to be able to play together, and for players on Xbox One and Playstation 4 to be able to play together. If you only want to play with people on the same console, you can also opt out of cross-play. Together with the bots that are to be included in the game, it will not be overly difficult to find servers to connect to. In addition to cross-play, the game also support cross-progression, which means that everything you unlock in e.g. The Playstation 5 version of the game will be available when you log in to the PC version.
  19. A new type of auto aim cheat that relies on machine learning to kill opponents of the cheater. This was done using a video stream from the player's monitor, and could thus be used on both console and PC. However, the developer User Vision seems to have made a little too much of a fuss, because their website has now been replaced with a message saying that they are shutting down, while at the same time taking down all the videos that marketed the cheat. In the notice, "User101" states that the person in question will no longer develop or provide access to software used to cheat in Activision's games, following a request from the company. Furthermore, the person points out that the new software with machine learning never had time to be released, but that it was just on its way. In conclusion, User101 says that the technology can have other uses, such as using a webcam to control movements in the game without using arms and legs. However, due to the potential negative uses, User101 will not continue the development. With that said, it's definitely not the last thing we've seen of machine learning and AI when it comes to cheating.
  20. After months of rumors and speculation, Valve finally unveiled its laptop gaming PC named Steam Deck. It is an AMD-powered device in the same shape as a Nintendo Switch and with the same price range. When the pre-orders started, the cheapest variant cost 419 euros. But while Nintendo seems to be increasing its profit margin, it seems that Valve is best able to recoup the costs - Gabe Newell calls the pricing "painful" in an interview with IGN. Sony and Microsoft also sell their gaming machines at a loss, hoping to gain it on the game sales, but Newell believes that Valve does not have such a calculation. Instead, they are more interested in seeing the effect of this type of device on the entire ecosystem of PC gaming, in the long run. Of course he hopes that they will sell millions of Steam Deck but, Valve can also afford to take these kind of chances. IGN was also among the first in the world to test a prototype of the Steam Deck and you can hear their first thoughts, mixed with interviews with Valve people, below.
  21. After several delays, Amazon's MMO project New World will launch its beta test today, but some concerns based on leaked information from the alpha test remain. Players who alpha tested the game in May announced that Amazon planned to add a store with "premium currency" to the game. There they would not only sell cosmetic items, but also "boost items" that, for example, can make it faster to level up their character - something that is common in free to play games, but rarely welcomed in games like this, which you have to buy to play. The answer from Amazon Game Studios was that items in the store "at launch will only be of a cosmetic nature". Ahead of the beta test, David Verfaillie - creative director of the game - has also emphasized that they have heard the community's feedback regarding purchased boosts in the game. In a question and answer session that Eurogamer attended, he said that the focus will be on cosmetic items to make his character a little more handsome, and that they do not want the game to be pay to win. But even though there will only be cosmetic items at the time of release, it's clear that Amazon is eager to add boost items to the game. "We believe there is room for quality of life improvements in the game without crossing the line to pay to win - that's something we will not do." When asked what these "quality of life" improvements could be, he gave extended storage space as an example, and that it can be a good option for those who do not have time to use the other ways to expand the storage space that is in the game and which does not cost money. What are your thoughts about this? I'm fine with booster items, I mean, if you don't want the boost, don't buy the item. As long as it's not stats boosting that give you an advantage over other players I don't see anything wrong with in-game items being sold. It's a company, they need to make money, even if the game is buy to play, it's not subscription based and people need to understand that to keep the game going and to keep up the quality they need an income. And it really is simple... If you do not like what the in-game store have to offer, DON'T BUY FROM IT...
  22. Lately, a bunch of leaked press photos of Samsung's upcoming products have been surfacing. We've seen the company's new phones, headphones and smartwatches. According to Max Jambor, Samsung is now tired of it and has started sending out copyright warnings to those who publish photos and videos showing the company's unannounced products. He believes that this "is just the beginning". Evan Blass also says that Samsung has chosen to have a more aggressive approach to leaked material. Others say that Xiaomi went the same way. According to the statement, this mainly applies to those who originally publish the material and not blogs and YouTube channels that republish the content.
  23. Google has been sued by 36 US states and the Washington DC. The company is alleged to have abused its control over the Play Store. The lawsuit calls into question Google's 30% charge for all in-store purchases. A year ago, Google clarified its policy regarding fees for in-app purchases, which was primarily a way to prevent a collection of successful titles from circumventing the existing rule. Google defends itself in a post on its product blog. The company says users can download apps from competing app stores or directly from developers' websites. Google gives a nod to Apple through the line "we do not impose the same restrictions as other mobile operating systems". Wilson White from Google writes that "it is strange that a group of public prosecutors choose to attack a system that offers more transparency and more choices than others". Apple is returning in White's defense speech and the approach seems to be "why us and not Apple?". White believes that the atmosphere ignores the competition from Apple's "fantastically successful app store", which he says accounts for the majority of all revenue from mobile app stores. Google also claims that the lawsuit is not about helping small businesses or protecting consumers, but about raising "a handful of big app developers who want to enjoy the benefits of Google Play without paying for it". Both Google and Apple have been scrutinized and blown away by the so-called "app tax" in their respective stores. Apple and Epic Games are currently in a major lawsuit over the fees. "This complaint alleges that consumers and developers have no option other than to use Google Play. But that’s not correct. Choice has always been a core tenet of Android. Device makers and carriers can preload competing app stores alongside Google Play on their devices. In fact, most Android devices ship with two or more app stores preloaded. And popular Android devices such as the Amazon Fire tablet come preloaded with a competitive app store and no Google Play Store."
  24. EA Play Live did not offer much new, but there was some talk about Battlefield 2042, including the new game mode that will be officially unveiled on July 22. We know we'll get to play on classic Battlefield maps, but Dice does not want to reveal more about the experience itself before the unveiling. Rumor has it that it will be called Battlefield Hub and that it will be remastered maps with classic vehicles and weapons, but which will be played with Battlefield 2042's Specialist system rather than previous game classes. The game mode is developed by Ripple Effect Studios, formerly known as Dice LA. Another new game mode is Hazard Zone. Oskar Gabrielson from Dice said that it is a group-based game mode that is not a classic battle royale, but something more modern. More information about Hazard Zone will be revealed this fall. Furthermore, they pointed out again that Battlefield 2042 is only a multiplayer experience and that they intend to expand the game after the release with the increasingly common seasonal concept. Gabrielson also talked a bit about the fact that he believes that cloud computing will make a big difference for future fps and, among other things, take care of things like AI, destruction and procedural content, so that even a console or computer can put its computing power on something else. We do not know whether it will be relevant for Battlefield 2042, but it would probably be cool with hyper realistic destruction that makes the previous games fade in comparison.
  25. Red Dead Redemption 2 is to get support for DLSS next week, along with new content for Red Dead Online, where a series of new missions are based on St Denis. By the way, you have not missed that you can buy the online part separately for around $20 (currently 50% discount on Steam). So if you want to crank a little extra graphical detail out of the cowboy adventure while sustaining the FPS, this might be it for you.
  26. Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong should have been released sometime this year, but a new trailer reveals that they have decided to postpone it until February 2022. The trailer focuses on one of the game's three playable characters, Galeb. He does not seem to be the most humble person in the world, which is perhaps understandable when one is one of the oldest and most feared vampires in the city and also sits on a fortune as well as immortality. Swansong is an RPG where we get to control three different characters, each with their own abilities. These can also be customized and will include both new attacks and abilities such as hacking and picking locks. However, the gaming world is also populated by humans, so it is important to keep a low profile if you do not want to be discovered. It will be released for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, Playstation 4/5 and Nintendo Switch.
