Close to 10 billion passwords exposed in historic leak
The largest database of leaked passwords in history to date was published on an online forum on July 4, 2024.
July 4, 2024 became a historic date, for a grim reason from a security point of view. At the time, a database with nearly 10 billion passwords was published on a hacking forum, in what is believed to be the biggest password leak ever, writes Cybernews. The text file with the passwords goes by the name Rockyou2024 and contains 9,948,575,739 unique passwords to be exact.
In 2021, the Rockyou2021 database was leaked, containing 8.4 billion passwords. According to the Cybernews team, which compared the leaked passwords with its own database, the new file builds on the old version, meaning around 1.5 billion new passwords have been added.
The risks of having all of these passwords compiled into a searchable database include an increased risk of so-called credential stuffing attacks, a type of cyber attack where attackers use large amounts of stolen credentials to try to log into various websites and services.
