If talk of the alternatives being Linux and UNIX is leaving you on edge, consider ReactOS as your Windows alternative.
Originally launched in 1996 as a Windows 95 clone project, the official website states that "the ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change."
In short, the aim is that you should be able to continue using your PC as you did before. ReactOS features over 9 million lines of code and is open source.
However, ReactOS has been in the alpha stage for quite some time now. While some apps, such as Adobe Reader, will run on ReactOS, many won't. It's lightweight, though, requiring just 500MB of hard disk space and 96MB of RAM to run.
One day, ReactOS might be a perfect, free alternative to Windows, but until then, it is available for your evaluation. Install it from the boot CD or run the LiveCD on your existing operating system.

Windows 3.x was the first to gain significant development and commercial traction. It combined the 8086, 286, and 386 modes of Windows 2 in to one package. It replaced the MSDOS Executive with a Program Manager and File Manager similar to those in OS/2 1.x. Much of its success was spurred by the availability and success of Microsoft Office. Although Microsoft would have had you believe otherwise, Windows 3.x was the direct foundation for Chicago/Windows 95.
Release notes
Microsoft Windows 3.1 was an evolution to Windows 3.0 and undoubtably the most popular, poster child version in the Windows 3.x series. Among the changes in Windows 3.1 include a drop of real mode support (see more below), the removal of the Reversi game, updated icons with richer colors, an improved setup process with better hardware detection, and the introduction of batch install. The File Manager was completely revamped and a revamped hypertext help system was introduced.
Applications could talk to each other not only through the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) protocol, also used by OS/2, but also by the new Windows-only OLE protocol which allows for applications to share any type of object more seamlessly. Write, Paintbrush and the new Object Packager have support for this technology which remains with us today in Windows 8.
Windows 3.1 also came with support for TrueType fonts which provide more realistic font rendering as they are outline fonts that can scale to any point size. With TrueType users could finally have a good grasp that what was shown on the screen would be what was printed without blocky outlines. TrueType survives today along with its close cousin OpenType.
Multimedia support was now fully integrated along with the expandable Control Panel into Windows 3.1. In Windows 3.0 this was provided by a Multimedia PC add-on which usually came with new Multimedia PCs, sound cards and CD-ROM drives of the day. Common supported cards include Adlib and Sound Blaster 16.
BETA During development Windows 3.1 was under the development codename Janus and 3 prerelease versions have surfaced, two beta candidates and a release candidate. The final beta was compiled on December 17, 1991 and expects a BIOS date of the 18th or later. Purple was replaced with blue and the boot screen was overhauled to the modern 3.1 variant.
Windows 3.2 was a Chinese language specific release. The only difference from 3.1 was additional support for Chinese characters and was released in late 1993.
On 386 systems and greater you can run a limited subset of 32-bit Windows applications (mostly those for Windows NT 3.5 and 95) with the Win32s (Win32 subset) patch.

that's all. Launch it. A blue Microsoft windows message will occur saying "Unknown product", just bypass...
it will automatically create its subfolder at first launch.

There’s greatness in simplicity sometimes. The UNIX philosophy of “do one thing well” applies here with this simple utility by PhutureProof which elegantly removes the cockpit tooltips from showing up when you mouse over any of the switches, buttons, etc in your cockpit - giving you an overall more immersive and realistic flight. Install it in the same way you would any other scenery or aircraft addon, by extracting the folder to your Community Folder.

If you’re anything like me, you find it easy to get lost in Microsoft Flight Simulator’s world aka, “Earth”. Especially if you’re exploring another country. Whilst there is a VFR map in-game that can be brought up by default using the V key, it’s sometimes a bit finicky, and you just wish that you could use something like Google maps to see where you are… Well, with VFRmap, now you can – for free! The project is completely open source, and runs a local web-server using Simconnect that will allow you to view your location, and some information about your trajectory including airspeed and altitude. Setup is very easy and just requires that you download the latest release and then in your browser navigate to http://localhost:9000 or http://<computer-ip>:9000 - be sure to first have a flight started in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, otherwise nothing will happen when you open the .exe.

Open http://localhost:9000 in your browser (try http://<computer-ip>:9000 if that doesn’t work)
In the lower left hand corner click load map
Done, your map should now be setup!

MSFS Mobile Companion App is a tool that allows you to control essential aircraft instruments such as NAV frequencies or autopilot using almost any mobile device. The MSFS Mobile Companion App is free to use.

Make sure your PC and your mobile device are connected to the same local network and that your home network is set to Private in your Network Profile settings. Start a flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Run MSFS_MCA.exe that you’ve unzipped previously. A Microsoft Defender security window may open when launching MSFS_MCA.exe for the first time. Allow the “unrecognized app” to run. Additionally, a Windows Security Alert Window may open when you launch MSFS_MCA.exe for the first time. Allow private network access for MSFS_MCA.exe in the Windows Security Alert Window. A command-line window will open that will give you instructions on the IP-address where you can access the MSFS Mobile Companion App. Don’t close the command line window. Open the IP-address in your mobile device’s web browser. The IP address will most likely be something like 192.168.0.XXX:4000. Notice: You can launch MSFS Mobile Companion App directly from your PC’s browser. In that case, just type in localhost:4000 in your browser’s url bar.
Known issues:
NAV frequencies can get out of sync, especially when rapidly pressing frequency adjustment buttons. Use the “Force Sync Frequencies” button to synchronize frequencies with the sim. NAV frequencies are not automatically synchronized when starting a second flight. Use the “Force Sync Frequencies” button to synchronize frequencies with the sim. Tuning frequencies in the NAV tab don’t work for the default 747, A320, CJ4 and King Air 350i. Use the NAV Direct tab for these planes. CDI switch doesn’t work in 747, A320 and CJ4. NAV Direct can only switch the CDI between VOR1 and GPS. VOR2 is not available. MSFS Mobile Companion App may crash when accessing it from multiple devices at once. Q-Dir is a free option to make managing your files and folders easy by allowing you to quickly regulate your hard disks, network folders, USB drives, floppy disks, and other storage devices.

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows. It provides a graphical user interface to the Clam AntiVirus engine. Flight of the Amazon Queen is a graphical point-and-click adventure game by Interactive Binary Illusions originally released in 1995 for Amiga (using AMOS) and MS-DOS (using C), and re-released as freeware in 2004 for use with ScummVM. Its gameplay is very similar in style to many of LucasArts' popular point-and-click adventures of the 1990s, and was inspired by Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure.
In 1949, Joe King, pilot for hire and owner of the Amazon Queen airplane which he uses for his work, arrives at a hotel in Rio de Janeiro to transport his next customer, famous film actress Faye Russel, only to be ambushed by his Dutch rival Anderson. Locked in a hotel room and trapped by Anderson's goons, Joe quickly gains assistance from Lola, a showgirl at the hotel and a former love interest, and escapes.

Dreamweb is an MS-DOS and Amiga point-and-click cyberpunk top-down adventure game released in 1994, developed by Creative Reality and published by Empire Interactive Entertainment. The game features mature themes and a dark plot filled with violence and brief full frontal nudity; a rarity for games at the time. Dreamweb was re-released as freeware in October 2012.

Beneath a Steel Sky is a 1994 cyberpunk science fiction point-and-click adventure game developed by British developer Revolution Software and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment for MS-DOS and Amiga home computers. The game was made available for free – and with the source code released – for PC platforms in 2003.

Broken Sword 2.5 The Return of the Templars is an unofficial part of the Broken Sword series. Developed and released by German company MindFactory on 28 September 2008 as freeware for Windows, it is a game created by fans to explain what happens during the time between Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror and Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon. It took eight years to develop, starting in 2000 as a response to the gap in the story that fans saw between the second and third game. It was originally released in German, but through 2009 and 2010, it was translated (via subtitles) to English, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Croatian, Portuguese, Russian, and French, with an English voice pack released in 2010. As might be expected of a fan project, it is a free, short game that stays relatively true to the story and feeling of the series.
