If you're bored of racing Formula 1 cars, rally cars or MotoGP bikes in their natural habitats, the Micro Machines series could be for you. It involves racing miniatures representing particular vehicle types across a particular terrain found around the house. The Sports Cars race on the desktop, 4x4s in the sandpit, Formula 1 cars on a snooker table, and so on. These levels were packed with variation. The Snooker tables has the track painted on, although this is open to deviation (as are most levels), and had you racing through the pockets and across the rim of the table. Tanks raced as well, with the chance of shooting out your opponent if they got directly in front of you. The desktop levels include binders to jump across, pencil-sharpeners to avoid, and lots of visual jokes in the open homework. Viewed from overhead with small graphics, the races include up to 4 cars. In one player challenge mode you race through the 21 tracks in a set order, selecting your 3 opponents as you go along (adding a fair amount of strategy - ideally you should aim to eliminate the better CPU cars early on), eliminating one after every third race (assuming that you can finish in the top 2 of a race within your 3 lives). If you win 3 races in a row without using a continue you get a time-trial race which can earn you an extra life. The real innovation of the game was in the multiplayer modes. You started with 4 points each, and when one car gets far enough ahead to force the other car off-screen, the slider moves in their favour. Once it reached the end (which involved beating them 4 times more than they beat you) you win the level, although if 3 laps were completed, the person leading at that point is declared the winner - with a sudden death play off if scores are level. 9 of the tracks are available in this mode, although you can also play this Head to Head system as a 1-player game across all the tracks. -

In The Flintstones: Bedrock Bowling, Fred Flintstone is toiling away as usual at his thankless construction job. When it's quitting time, his boss threatens him with summary termination if he does not finish his trench-digging assignment by the next morning. The biggest dilemma for Fred is that he needs to practice for an upcoming bowling tournament. The benevolent alien named The Great Gazoo materializes and solves the problem by digging a trench and lining it with giant bowling pins. He then gives Fred a large bowling ball half shell in which to play live action bowling. The action in Bedrock Bowling takes the form of steering the bowling shell down 8 different lanes. Each lane has 10 pins that the player must try to hit. Additionally, there are many diamonds, birds, and other powerups along the way to be collected for points. The 8 lanes are Gravel Factory, Quarry, Flooded, Tar, Freeway, Crystal Mine, Lava, and Rockzilla. -

Stunts (4D Sports Driving outside of US) is a 3D car racing simulation that puts emphasis on the on racing on stunt tracks. The game contains a variety of cars, courses and opponents to choose from (who represent a difficulty level). The game provides unusual stunt objects including loops, corkscrews and jumps. Race tracks contain three types of surfaces: paved road, gravel road and ice. Each of them offer different grip and traction. There is also grass and water that surround roads. The former slows down the car and the latter is lethal and the car instantly crashes. It is possible to watch races in instant replay from different camera angles. A track editor is included as well.-

This sequel to the original Destruction Derby offers more of the same no-holds-barred action and mayhem with new tracks and a lot of technical improvements and features not seen in the original, such as a pit stop feature that allows car repairs! Gameplay is identical to its predecessor -- the objective consists of gaining points by winning races or "creatively" crashing opponents and climbing to the top of the rankings.-

Every year, a mysterious man named Calypso sends e-mails to renowned drivers, inviting them to compete in a tournament called Twisted Metal. The conditions of the tournament are anything but ordinary: opponents fight each other in armored vehicles with mounted weapons. The winner receives an audience with Calypso, and is granted a single wish - a wish without limits, be it money, power, or even our reality itself. In 2005, the annual tournament is held again in Los Angeles, and twelve drivers, each with his own agenda, have come to compete to death. Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat game. The player selects one of the twelve available drivers and takes part in the competition. In the one-player story mode, the player must progress through six combat stages; all the opponents must be destroyed in order to win the race. In the two-player co-op mode, players choose a battlefield and control two cars in an attempt to get rid of the competition. All the vehicles are equipped with two mounted machine guns; though relatively weak, they have unlimited ammunition. Other weapons can be picked up by driving over them during the races. These include fire and homing missiles, land mines, tire spikes, and others. Each participant has a life bar, which can be replenished by entering a specific area on the stage. -

After an era of political unrest in the early 21st century, the world's leaders have fallen and natural resources have been depleted. This results in the downfall of the world economy and leads to a series of bloody conflicts in a world where the less fortunate strive for survival and live for one reason.... illegal racing. In StateShift, racing machines with highly advanced morphing abilities compete in illegal underground races around the world. Drivers go one on one with up to fifteen racers across nine tournaments. The titular stateshifts refer to special power-ups the player can unlock. With names such as «Dragster», «Ghost», «Mamouth» and «Scorch», they can be used to drive faster or take corners more sharply, but require picking up energy cells on the tracks to recharge. The game has various modes including Career Mode to unlock new tournaments, tracks, characters and stateshifts, Time Trial, Challenges, Quick Race and various tutorials. The game also has a multiplayer mode via Wi-Fi.-

Maxis has worked to build a franchise on its thoughtful and addictive management simulations, and has earned a respectable reputation for its efforts. Streets of Simcity, an arcade driving game, is the product of an improved version of the Simcopter 3D engine, but while Simcopter is a helicopter simulation, Streets takes on the arcade racing genre with tires smoking and guns blazing. However, in a market saturated with high quality driving games, the advertised feature that gamers will find most enticing is the option to load up and drive in any Simcity 2000 city.-

The Die Hard series of films are somewhat obvious candidates for being the basis of a computer game. The combination of violence and terrorists with strange European accidents provides excellent material for an action game. Die Hard Trilogy is a set of three games based on the three films. Bundling three games together in one package initially sounds like a bad idea. Surely you'll end up with three weak games rather than one strong one? However, Die Hard Triology works remarkably well. Die Hard Trilogy gives you three very different games for your money. All of them are quite compelling but aren't really of a high enough quality to maintain your interest for too long. However, because there are three games, you can move between them to keep your interest level up. The package works surprisingly well. However, none of the games would really stand up all that well on their own, so you really have to decide what it is you are looking for. If you want one excellent version of one of these styles of games then you would be advised to look elsewhere. However, if you want a wide range of action then this package may suit you. I certainly enjoyed it and it is one of the better movie licenses of recent times.-

You probably feel like a crash test dummy when you're playing this game - it's not only a racing game, but you get points for wrecking your enemies! The amount of points you get depends on how you hit them ... e.g. you get more points for getting them do a 360 other than driving into their sides at high speed. The game has more to offer: a head to head mode with only two cars or the legendary destruction derby itself - a huge arena, every car starts at the edge of it, and then - have a nice crash!-

The second in the Twisted Metal series of car combat games, and the last to be developed by SingleTrac, Twisted Metal 2 is considered by most of its fans to be the pinnacle of the series. Combat takes place between a wide array of vehicles ranging from a man strapped between two wheels to an ice cream truck, using an eclectic arrangement of weaponry. The action takes place in 8 different locales around the world, many featuring destructible buildings and landmarks. The plot - the least important element in games of this kind - is simple: you are competing in a worldwide car combat game staged by the a powerful man named Calypso. You pick your vehicle from an array of heavily-modified cars, including a flamethrowing Chevette, a spinning F1, to a dangerous contraption that consists of nothing more than two monster wheels (with you strapped in the middle). You then play through a series of arena throughout the world, picking up weapons and trying to kill other vehicles before you are toast. Like other SingleTrac games (most notably JetMoto), the gameplay in Twisted Metal 2 is very well designed. Each car has its own special move, and the game obeys a logical yet totally unrealistic physics model that allows you to turn on a dime and go flying 100 feet in the air. The weapons in comparison are quite standard: dumbfire and homing missiles, ricochet bombs, mines, napalm, and many more. The environments are also very well-designed. The Paris level, for example, features a destructible Eiffel Tower in addition to several priceless works of art in the Louvre; the Antarctica level collapses piece by piece until one small glacier island is left; the incredibly large Hong Kong level contains a subway (complete with trains coming and going on schedule) and one of the biggest and most difficult bosses you will ever see. There are also a few multiplayer modes to choose from, including a two-player co-operative mode that allows you and a friend to go against computer-controlled teams. With excellent levels, furious action, and unrealistic but fun physics, Twisted Metal 2 is definitely worth a look for anyone who enjoys games like Quarantine, Death Drome, or Rocket Jockey. Two thumbs up, way up! -
