Microsoft plans to buy Activision Blizzard for $68 billion
SirMadsen posted a blog entry in SirMadsen's Gaming
Microsoft has the spending pants on and is not content with having pinched Zenimax and Bethesda. Now they also announce that they intend to buy Activision Blizzard for 68.7 billion dollars. In a post on the Xbox website, they write that the companies will continue to act independently of each other until the deal is completed. Furthermore, they write that they aim to offer as many of Activision Blizzard's games as possible via Game Pass to Xbox and PC, including new and old titles. Activision Blizzard is based in many traditional studios and valuable brands, such as Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty and Overwatch, so Game Pass can undoubtedly get a real boost if the deal goes through. In the post, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer also writes that creative success and self-reliance go hand in hand with treating all people with respect, which unfortunately does not seem to have been the motto of Activision Blizzard in recent years. He points out that all teams and leaders are expected to live up to this and that they look forward to spreading Microsoft's corporate culture to the teams at Activision Blizzard. However, everyone's favorite CEO Bobby Kotick is reported to remain in office, at least for the time being.- 1 comment

Geoff Keighley: More big acquisitions in the gaming world underway
SirMadsen posted a blog entry in SirMadsen's Gaming
We had barely been reached by the news that Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard before Sony announced that they will buy Halo and Destiny developer Bungie. Shortly afterwards, Sony's CEO Jim Ryan went out and said they were not done with their acquisitions. Now the industry profile Geoff Keighley is joining. Via Twitter, he writes that he has heard from several sources that a number of major deals in the gaming world are in the final stages of their negotiations and that it "will be an interesting year". He does not explicitly say that these are regular acquisitions, but it could also be high-profile exclusivity agreements. Something we can safely state is that something that a race is ongoing between the giants of the gaming world. Given the size of the acquisitions, the next deal could also affect almost any player in the industry.-

After last week’s news that Microsoft buys Activision Blizzard, there will now be more news about the Diablo and WoW developer: the studio will make a completely new survival game. A press release says that this is a survival game for PC and console. It’s located in a whole new game world, so it is not based on any of the company’s already well-used brands. It’s still early in the development and they reveal nothing about setting or anything else. In connection with the announcement, they are looking for employees in several areas.

Sony expect Activision's games to continue to be multi-platform
SirMadsen posted a blog entry in SirMadsen's Gaming
Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard could have major consequences for Playstation: there is a risk that games and series such as Call of Duty, Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 will not be released for Sony's console. It will probably take at least until the deal is approved and completed before that issue is on the agenda, but Sony has already made it clear that they expect Activision's games to continue to come to Playstation. They also expect the agreements to be fulfilled. A spokesman for the Wall Street Journal (paywall) says: Microsoft said in the press release about the deal that they intend to continue to support communities on "a number of platforms", which should mean that games available on e.g. Playstation and Switch will continue to do so. But the question of what will happen to new games when the deal has gone through, there is no answer to now. In 2014, Mojang and Minecraft were bought by Microsoft, and it remains for Playstation, Nintendo and other platforms. The same goes for all Bethesda games that were out there when the company was bought 1.5 years ago. But - upcoming Starfield will be released exclusively for Xbox and Windows. So Diablo 4 and other heavyweights can probably cause headaches for the Sony camp for a while. What are your thoughts?
